Founding and Ownership

Unibet's own About Us page dates the brand to 1997, stating that Unibet began that year with a single ambition, for its founder Anders Ström to share his sports knowledge and help others make more informed bets.

Unibet is today part of FDJ UNITED. The group's own announcement of its rebranding names Unibet among its iconic online betting brands and says those brands continue to operate under their own trade names. FDJ UNITED's history page records, under 2024, that FDJ announced in October the acquisition of Kindred, Unibet's previous parent group. The group has since taken the FDJ UNITED name. Unibet states on its own site that the group serves more than 33 million players.

Licensing

The Great Britain site is operated by Platinum Gaming Limited, whose registered office the footer gives as Sovereign Place, 117 Main Street, Gibraltar. Platinum Gaming Limited appears on the Gambling Commission's public register under account number 45322, where its remote casino licence is listed as 045322-R-324275-020 and shown as active from 12 July 2016. The same register records the licensee's head office as Kindred London Ltd, Kindred House, 17 Hartfield Road, London, which is how the Great Britain licensee is tied to Kindred rather than to a company that merely shares a name. Alongside the British licence, the footer states that Platinum Gaming Limited is licensed by the Government of Gibraltar under licence numbers 091 and 092 and by the Gibraltar Gambling Commissioner under the Gambling Act 2005.

Unibet runs separate sites for separate markets rather than one global site, and each of those sites is licensed where it operates. The Great Britain licence covers what the Commission regulates — remote gambling where the products and services are "offered to consumers in Great Britain" — and the Gibraltar licence is a separate authorisation.

Account Eligibility and Minimum Age

Clause 4.2 of Unibet's Great Britain terms and conditions requires an account holder to be 18 (eighteen) years of age or older and records that underage gambling is a criminal offence. The same clause requires the account to be used solely for the holder's own personal use and the holder to be resident in a territory Unibet permits. Other Unibet markets publish their own terms, and the age in those terms is not covered by the British clause quoted here.

FDJ UNITED describes the online part of its business, of which Unibet is a brand, as covering sports betting and horse-race betting, poker and casino games, in markets where those activities are locally regulated.
