Online casino play is licensed in Tanzania. The Gaming Board of Tanzania, established under the Gaming Act Cap. 41 and effective from 1 July 2003, issues an Internet Casino licence as one of 28 licence types, and publishes an annual Internet Casino licence fee of TZS 110,000,000 on top of a TZS 1,000,000 annual application fee. Internet Sports Betting is a separate licence at TZS 90,000,000 a year. The Board publishes its casino licensees in two groups, Land Based and Online.

Online casino play is licensed in Tanzania, and it is licensed as its own category rather than folded into sports betting. The regulator is the Gaming Board of Tanzania, which states on its own site that it "is a gaming regulatory body which was established under the Gaming Act Cap. 41 and became effective on 1st July 2003" and that it "is responsible for overseeing, monitoring and regulating the conduct of gaming activities in Tanzania". Before that Act the industry ran under the Pools and Lotteries Act, 1967 and the National Lotteries Act, 1974; the Board records that continued economic reform "necessitated the formulation of the National Policy on Gaming Activities and subsequently enactment of the Gaming Act Cap. 41, hence the Gaming Board of Tanzania".

The Internet Casino Licence

The Board publishes 28 licence types. Row 10 of that table is Internet Casino, in the Gaming Licence category, and row 11 is Internet Sport Betting — two separate licences, so an operator's betting licence does not carry its casino offering. The Board's fee schedule prices them separately as well: an Internet Casino licence costs TZS 1,000,000 as an annual application fee and TZS 110,000,000 as an annual licence fee, while Internet Sports Betting is TZS 1,000,000 and TZS 90,000,000. For comparison, a land-based casino licence is TZS 110,000,000 a year in Dar Es Salaam and TZS 60,000,000 a year in other regions.

Checking a Licence

The Board maintains public registers of its licensees by category, and the casino register is split into a Land Based listing and an Online listing, each giving the holder's company name and trade name. Further registers cover sports betting, slots and route operations, lotteries, virtual games and other gaming licences. Those registers, rather than any third-party list, are where a Tanzanian player can confirm that an operator holds a licence from the Board.

Player Protection

The Board publishes its own Responsible Gaming guidance, framed around four principles: treat gaming as leisure and not "a job or a reliable way to earn a living"; "Only play with money you can afford to lose. Never use funds meant for rent, school fees, or groceries."; expect no shortcut to wealth, because "Real wealth comes from hard work and investment, not the roll of a dice."; and keep play to adults — "Gaming is for Adults Only. We maintain a zero-tolerance policy regarding underage gaming." The page carries an 18+ marker and the warning "Gaming involves risk. If the fun stops, STOP." The Board also publishes a toll-free number, 0800 110 051, on its own site, presented through a "Toll Free Counselling" panel and described there as a free line for customer support, technical help and gaming inquiries.

Sweepstakes Casinos

Sweepstakes casinos are a separate product from real-money online casinos and are never a licensed alternative to one. No Tanzanian source read for this page addresses the dual-currency sweepstakes model, so the sweepstakes position for Tanzania is recorded as not researched rather than guessed at.

Support in Tanzania

The Gaming Board of Tanzania publishes its own Responsible Gaming guidance, built around four principles — treat gaming as leisure, play only with money you can afford to lose, expect no shortcut to wealth, and keep play to adults — and states "Gaming is for Adults Only. We maintain a zero-tolerance policy regarding underage gaming." The Board also publishes a toll-free number, 0800 110 051, reached through the "Toll Free Counselling" panel on its own site and described there as a free line for customer support, technical help and gaming inquiries. No Tanzanian problem-gambling helpline run by a dedicated treatment service was found on that service's own site during this pass; the Board's line is the number it publishes itself.
