Iowa licenses casinos and online sports wagering, and it licenses no online casino. The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission states on its own site that Iowa law does not allow for online casinos, slots or poker, and that casino style gaming and poker are only permissible in person at licensed casinos and racetracks, while sports wagering may be conducted online by a licensed operator. The Commission regulates licensed casino gambling, sports wagering, daily fantasy sports and simulcast wagering. Iowa also prohibits wagering on credit: a licensed casino or sports wagering operator may not accept a credit card for wagering. Free and confidential support is available through 1-800-BETS OFF, which Your Life Iowa publishes on its own pages.

The Regulator Says Online Casino Games Are Illegal in Iowa

Iowa is one of the clearest states to describe, because its regulator has written the distinction down. In a public warning on its own site the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission states: "Online Casino Style Gambling is Illegal in Iowa: Iowa law does not allow for online casinos, slots or poker. Any website or advertisement offering such activities within the state is not authorized or licensed by the IRGC and should be treated with suspicion."

The same release says what is allowed: "Online Sports Wagering is Legal in Iowa: Sports wagering is legal in Iowa; however, the operator must be licensed." and draws the line in a single sentence: "You can wager on sports online, but casino style gaming and poker are only permissible in person at licensed casinos and racetracks." That is exactly the difference this page exists to make plain. Iowa runs a licensed statewide online sportsbook market and licenses no online casino at all. This site does not point readers at operators that are not licensed where they are.

The Commission also warns about how unlicensed sites present themselves: "Scammers Exploit Trust: Fraudulent sites often use official logos and branding to appear legitimate or spoof real Iowa casinos and lure individuals into providing personal and financial information."

Payment Rules Are a Useful Tell

Iowa restricts how a lawful wager may be funded, and the Commission suggests using that as a check: "Iowa Does Not Allow Wagering on Credit. Per Iowa law, a licensed casino operator or sports wagering operator shall not accept a credit card for wagering." The same passage adds that "Gambling with crypto currency is also not currently allowed." A site asking an Iowa player for a credit card or offering crypto play is, on the regulator's own account, a sign that it is not licensed in Iowa.

Sweepstakes Casinos: Why No Status Is Recorded

No Iowa statute, administrative rule or official statement addressing dual-currency online sweepstakes casinos was found for this page. The Commission's warning quoted above is about online casinos, slots and poker, which are different products, and extending it to sweepstakes would be an inference rather than a finding. No sweepstakes status is therefore recorded. Sweepstakes casinos and real-money casinos are separate products and neither is presented here as a licensed version of the other.

Who Regulates

One body covers the licensed verticals: "The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission is responsible for regulating and overseeing licensed casino gambling, sports wagering, daily fantasy sports and simulcast wagering in the state." Its own statement of purpose is that "The mission of the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission is to administer the laws and rules for gambling and wagering in Iowa in order to ensure the integrity of licensees and their operations, maintain public confidence in regulated gambling and wagering activities in Iowa, and promote economic development for the citizens of Iowa.", and it adds that "The Commission carries out this mission by enforcing laws and rules for the wagering public and industry, as well as ensuring industry participants are adhering to responsible gaming practices, promoting the highest quality of sustainable operations, promoting public safety, providing quality entertainment, investing into Iowa goods and resources, encouraging the hiring of Iowans, and requiring reinvestment in facilities and amenities located in Iowa."

Support in Iowa

Your Life Iowa runs the state's gambling helpline, 1-800-BETS OFF, and publishes on its own pages that it offers free, confidential support for anyone with a gambling problem. Nationally, the National Problem Gambling Helpline™ is operated by the National Council on Problem Gambling and can be reached on 1-800-MY-RESET; the NCPG publishes that number on its own pages, while older state and industry materials sometimes print a different one, so more than one national number is in circulation; where a state body publishes its own helpline, that number is shown alongside it.
