Not trackedAlabama licenses no casino and no online casino, and it has no state lottery. Section 65 of the Constitution of Alabama 2022 denies the legislature the power to authorise lotteries or gift enterprises for any purpose. In the Criminal Code, Section 13A-12-21 makes simple gambling a Class C misdemeanour for a player and Section 13A-12-22 makes promoting gambling a Class A misdemeanour for anyone else, with unlawful defined simply as not specifically authorized by law. The only thing the gambling article expressly preserves is pari-mutuel betting at race meetings authorised by statute. Electronic bingo and tribal gaming have each been the subject of long-running disputes in the state, and neither produces a state online casino licence.
Alabama Has No Lottery, No Casino Licence and a Constitutional Bar
Alabama is one of the few states with no lottery at all, and the reason is constitutional. Section 65 of the Constitution of Alabama 2022 provides: “The legislature shall have no power to authorize lotteries or gift enterprises for any purposes, and shall pass laws to prohibit the sale in this state of lottery or gift enterprise tickets, or tickets in any scheme in the nature of a lottery; and all acts, or parts of acts heretofore passed by the legislature of this state, authorizing a lottery or lotteries, and all acts amendatory thereof, or supplemental thereto, are hereby avoided.”
The Criminal Code supplies the offences. Section 13A-12-21 covers the player: “A person commits the crime of simple gambling if he knowingly advances or profits from unlawful gambling activity as a player.” with one defence — “It is a defense to a prosecution under this section that a person charged with being a player was engaged in a social game in a private place.” — and a penalty: “Simple gambling is a Class C misdemeanor.” Section 13A-12-22 covers everyone else: “A person commits the crime of promoting gambling if he knowingly advances or profits from unlawful gambling activity otherwise than as a player.” and “Promoting gambling is a Class A misdemeanor.”
The word that does the work is defined in 13A-12-20: “UNLAWFUL. Not specifically authorized by law.” Alabama specifically authorises very little. The gambling article's own saving clause reads: “The provisions of this article shall not apply to pari-mutuel betting at race meetings authorized by statute.” Casino games, online or otherwise, are not among the authorised forms, and Alabama licenses no online casino. This site does not point readers at operators that are not licensed where they are.
The underlying definitions are the standard ones: “GAMBLING. A person engages in gambling if he stakes or risks something of value upon the outcome of a contest of chance or a future contingent event not under his control or influence, upon an agreement or understanding that he or someone else will receive something of value in the event of a certain outcome.” and “CONTEST OF CHANCE. Any contest, game, gaming scheme or gaming device in which the outcome depends in a material degree upon an element of chance, notwithstanding that skill of the contestants may also be a factor therein.”
Electronic Bingo and Tribal Gaming Are Separate Arguments
Alabama has seen long disputes over electronic bingo machines and operates alongside tribal gaming conducted under federal law. Neither of those produces a state licence for an online casino, and nothing on this page should be read as describing either. A tribal-state arrangement is not a state online casino licence.
No Sourced Position on Sweepstakes Casinos, but One Clause Worth Reading
Alabama has published no statute, rule, court decision or official opinion that this research could find addressing sweepstakes or dual-currency casinos, so this page records no sweepstakes status rather than inferring one. One definition is worth quoting because of where the same wording leads elsewhere: “SOMETHING OF VALUE. Any money or property, any token, object or article exchangeable for money or property or any form of credit or promise directly or indirectly contemplating transfer of money or property or of any interest therein, or involving extension of a service entertainment or a privilege of playing at a game or scheme without charge.”
The closing words — a privilege of playing at a game or scheme without charge — are the clause Washington State relies on when it says that play for virtual currency is likely to be illegal gambling. Alabama's statute contains it too. That makes the question arguable in Alabama rather than answered, and an arguable question is not a status.
Sweepstakes casinos and real-money casinos are separate products with separate rules, and neither is presented here as a licensed version of the other.
Why No Casinos Are Listed for Alabama
Real-money online casino play is prohibited in Alabama, so no casinos are listed here.
Online Casino Status by State
Real-money and sweepstakes status are tracked separately, and a dash means nobody has checked yet — not that nothing is permitted.

The National Problem Gambling Helpline™ is operated by the National Council on Problem Gambling and can be reached on 1-800-MY-RESET by call or text, or by chat at 1800myreset.org. The NCPG publishes 1-800-MY-RESET as the national number on its own pages, and that is the number recorded here because it is the one the helpline operator itself publishes. Older state and industry materials sometimes print a different national number, so more than one is in circulation; where a state body publishes its own helpline, that number is shown alongside this one.
