Deposit Match

A deposit match gives you bonus funds as a percentage of what you deposit, up to a stated cap. It is the most arithmetically legible bonus there is: you can work out exactly how much play it commits you to before you accept it, and the sum is worth doing.

How it works

How It Works

A deposit match is quoted as a percentage and a ceiling — a match on what you pay in, capped at some amount. Two numbers, and both bind: a hundred per cent match capped at a hundred pounds stops matching once you have paid in a hundred, so the hundred and first pound earns you no bonus at all.

What makes a deposit match worth understanding is that you can do the sum in advance. The wagering requirement is a multiple, the bonus is a known amount, and the product of the two is the volume of wagers you are committing to.

One rule worth knowing, and knowing the limits of. In Great Britain the Gambling Commission caps how heavy a wagering requirement may be: under social responsibility code provision 5.1.1 of its Licence Conditions and Codes of Practice, licensees must not "Apply wagering requirements, which requires a customer to play through bonus funds, over a maximum of 10 times." The same provision defines the term — "A wagering requirement is where a customer is required to make wagers totalling a particular value for funds to become withdrawable." That is a rule for operators licensed in Great Britain, and nowhere else. We have not established what any other regulator requires, so if you are playing anywhere else, treat the number in front of you as the operator's choice rather than a legal ceiling.

Work an example. Deposit fifty pounds, take a hundred per cent match, and you hold fifty pounds of bonus funds. At a requirement of ten times the bonus — the heaviest Great Britain permits — that is five hundred pounds of wagers before any of it becomes withdrawable.

Now move the base rather than the multiple. If the same ten times is calculated on deposit plus bonus, a hundred pounds here, the figure is a thousand pounds of wagers. A British licensee could not set that requirement: a thousand pounds of wagers against fifty pounds of bonus funds is twenty times the bonus, and 5.1.1 caps playing through bonus funds at ten. Outside Great Britain nothing we have read stops it, which is exactly why the base is worth finding before you accept.

And the size of that shift depends on the match. Deposit-plus-bonus doubles the commitment only when the match is a hundred per cent, because only then is the deposit equal to the bonus. On a fifty per cent match — fifty pounds in, twenty-five of bonus — the base goes from twenty-five to seventy-five, and the commitment triples. On a two hundred per cent match it rises by half. The rule is that the base grows by the deposit, so the thinner the match, the more the change costs you.

That is why the base matters as much as the multiple, and why a smaller percentage with a lighter requirement can be worth more than a larger percentage with a heavier one. There is no judgement in multiplying two numbers, and it is worth doing before you opt in rather than after.

Then ask what the arithmetic is actually telling you. If the volume of play a match commits you to is more than you would have chosen without it, the bonus has not made your money go further — it has made you stake more of it. That is the question the sum is for. Set a budget before you opt in, and only gamble with money you can afford to lose.

One limit on everything above: this page is about real-money casino offers. A sweepstakes casino sells or gifts packages in its own currencies rather than matching a deposit in cash, on redemption terms we have not researched, so the arithmetic on this page does not transfer to one.

The fine print

What to Check

A deposit match is the one bonus you can fully evaluate before accepting, so it is worth taking the two minutes.

  • The base of the requirement. Bonus only, or deposit plus bonus. Moving the base adds your deposit to it, so the thinner the match the more it costs: double the commitment at a hundred per cent match, triple at fifty per cent.
  • The cap on the match. Depositing past it buys you no more bonus, so it sets the largest deposit the offer rewards.
  • Any minimum deposit. Below it, the match does not apply at all.
  • Game contributions. The multiple assumes every wager counts in full; where a category contributes less, the real volume of play is proportionately higher.
  • The maximum bet, and the expiry. The first can forfeit the bonus; the second can make the requirement unreachable regardless of how you play.
  • Whether your payment method is excluded. Terms sometimes exclude particular methods from qualifying, so look for that list before you choose how to pay.

Then ask the question the arithmetic sets up: is the volume of play this commits me to something I would have chosen to do anyway? If not, the bonus is not a discount on what you were going to do. It is a reason to do more of it.
