About Wise

What Wise Is

Wise is a cross-border money transfer and multi-currency account service. It runs a consumer account with local account details in several currencies, international transfers between them, and a multi-currency debit card. For a casino cashier the relevant question is narrower than whether Wise works: it is whether Wise permits a gambling payment, and Wise answers that question itself.

Wise's Own Position on Gambling

Wise publishes a help-centre article setting out its own position on gambling. It opens by saying that gambling is restricted or even banned in several countries based on local laws and regulations, and it then names eleven of them. Wise states that any transfers related to gambling must not involve those countries, and that doing so is against its own Acceptable Use Policy.

The eleven are not reproduced here. Wise amends that article without notice, and a country list copied into a paragraph would not be re-checked when it does; Wise's own article is where the current one is published, and it is the list a reader should work from.

The article is explicit that this covers a casino deposit. Among the things Wise lists as a gambling-related transfer is making payments to online gambling businesses and casinos. It also covers the other direction, receiving money from businesses in the gambling industry, which is what a withdrawal to a Wise account would be.

The Conditions on a Gambling Transfer

Wise does not bar every gambling-related transfer. Its help centre sets out conditions under which one is permitted, and they are cumulative. The account holder must not be residing in any of the countries the article names. The sender and recipient must not be located in any of them, and nor may the sending or receiving bank. The currency must not belong to any of them either, and Wise names the currencies that are therefore not allowed. And the gambling provider involved in the transfer must be licensed in the country in which the account is registered.

Wise adds that this is not an exclusive list, that it will cancel or return any payments that exceed its risk tolerance, and that it may sometimes close accounts. A reader should therefore treat a Wise transfer to a casino as conditional rather than supported, and read Wise's own article for the countries and the currencies that condition it.

Business Accounts and Gambling Operators

On the receiving side Wise is unconditional. It states that it does not support any business in any part of the world that is involved in gambling, and that it may close a business account as a result. The examples it gives include lotteries and games of chance with cash prizes. That is a statement about who may hold a Wise business account, not about a player's personal transfer, but it means a casino cannot rely on Wise as a receiving rail.

Where the Acceptable Use Policy Draws Its Line

Wise's Acceptable Use Policy lists gambling among the categories of business and transaction it does not support, and says such businesses or transactions may be declined. It then names its own set of countries for gambling payments and businesses, and that set is not the same as the help-centre article's: each page names countries the other leaves out, and neither states which of the two governs. So the two documents do not add up to one answer, and no single list is treated here as definitive.

The policy also opens its restrictions with an exception for lawful transactions using the Wise Multi-Currency Card. That exception is drafted around lawfulness, so it settles nothing by itself: whether a card payment to a casino is lawful turns on the player's own market and the operator's licence, which are the questions the exception leaves standing. Nothing here should be read as saying a card gets a payment through where Wise's policy, or a regulator, does not allow it.

Fees and Timings

No deposit fee and no transfer time are stated here. Wise quotes a fee per transfer against the currency pair and amount rather than publishing a flat consumer figure, and no Wise page states a settlement time for a payment to a gambling merchant. Neither is estimated.
