About Pix
What Pix Is
Pix is Brazil's instant payment system. The Banco Central do Brasil describes it as the payment method the central bank created, in which funds are transferred between accounts in a few seconds at any hour or day, and states that a Pix can be made from a current account, a savings account or a prepaid payment account. The same page says Pix can be used in everyday situations between individuals, businesses and public bodies.
How Widely Pix Operates
The Banco Central states that it is possible to make a Pix from fintechs, payment institutions and cooperatives, across more than 900 participating institutions, and that anyone can make or receive a Pix through the bank where they hold an account. It publishes official and updated statistics on the use of Pix, and describes it on that page as a payment method that is already part of Brazilians' everyday life.
Pix and Brazil's Betting Payment Rules
Pix is the instrument Brazil's betting payment rules named rather than barred. Portaria SPA/MF nº 615, de 16 de abril de 2024 requires deposits, withdrawals and prize payments for the fixed-odds betting lottery to be made exclusively by electronic transfer between an account the player has registered and the operator's transactional account, both held at institutions authorised by the Banco Central do Brasil. It then defines electronic transfer, for the purposes of that ordinance, as Pagamento Instantâneo (Pix), Transferência Eletrônica Disponível (TED), a debit or prepaid card, or a book transfer within a single institution — and separately forbids operators from accepting cash, boletos, cheques or crypto-assets.
That framework has since been overtaken by a wider prohibition. Medida Provisória nº 1.394/2026, de 25 de setembro de 2026 prohibits, across the national territory, the exploitation, offer, intermediation and advertising of fixed-odds betting lotteries, including where carried out by an agent established abroad offering them to a person located in that territory. That measure concerns the betting activity, not the payment instrument: nothing in it restricts Pix, which continues to operate for payments generally.
Cost and Limits
The Banco Central lists Pix as free for individuals and lower cost for legal persons, and states that there is no minimum transaction amount. Maximum limits are not set centrally — the central bank says a bank may set maximum limits to prevent fraud and to prevent money laundering and terrorist financing, which means a player's own bank decides them. Any deposit minimum, maximum or fee charged by a casino is set by that casino and is not stated here.
Timings
The Banco Central describes Pix settlement as real time, with the money in the account within a few seconds, and says the service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including public holidays. That is the scheme's own settlement, not a cashier's crediting time; no casino's processing time is stated here.
