Klarna

LimitedKlarna's own terms exclude online casinos: the United Kingdom Klarna Credit Card agreement lists online casinos among the Prohibited Goods and Services the card may not be used for, and the same exclusion appears in Klarna's One-time Card terms in the United Kingdom and the United States.

About Klarna

What Klarna Is

Klarna is a payments and shopping service that offers immediate payment and deferred payment at a merchant's checkout. Its own page states that Klarna is a fully licensed bank in Sweden and the EU and follows all local regulations wherever it operates, and that over 120m customers across 26 countries choose its flexible payment options.

Klarna's Own Terms Exclude Online Casinos

Klarna excludes online casino use itself, and in more than one of its products. The United Kingdom Klarna Credit Card agreement states that the card may not be used for a list of services and purchases that includes online casinos, and gathers that list under the defined term Prohibited Goods and Services. The terms for Klarna's One-time Card Shopping Service in the United Kingdom carry the same list, and the United States One-time Card terms state that the user agrees not to use the service for online casinos among other categories. The exclusion is the provider's, not a casino's: it is written into the agreement a Klarna user signs. A cashier that offers Klarna for a casino deposit is offering a use Klarna's own agreement does not permit.

Credit, but Not Only a Credit Card

Klarna is deferred credit, and one Klarna product is a credit card in its own right: Klarna's United Kingdom agreement states that the Klarna Credit Card can be used to make purchases in-store, on the internet or over the phone to merchants in the United Kingdom and abroad who accept Visa as a payment method. That matters because the Gambling Commission's prohibition in Great Britain is written in terms of credit cards — its guidance for the public states that gambling businesses must not accept credit card payments for gambling. That wording names credit cards, so nothing is claimed here about Klarna's deferred payment options that are not cards.

Sofort Is Not Klarna

Klarna acquired Sofort and folded its bank-transfer service into its own range. Klarna's own announcement states that the Sofortüberweisung function will from then on be available as part of the Klarna Pay Now product range, and that consumers in Germany will continue to see the name Sofortüberweisung in their payment process. The separate Sofort deposit method is tracked on this site as discontinued; that is a finding about Sofort, not about Klarna, which continues to trade.

Fees and Timings

No fee and no timing is stated here. Klarna's charges depend on the payment option selected and on the market, and no Klarna page states a figure for a casino deposit, so none is given.
