Interac
Interac is the Canadian domestic payments network, operating since 1984, and the row covers the brand rather than one product. Interac Online — the product that sent a shopper to their own online banking to authorise a payment, and the one online cashiers offered — is no longer available as of 31 October 2024. Interac e-Transfer, which moves money between Canadian bank accounts, is still in service, and Interac Direct, the current card-free online bank payment, works only at participating merchants in Canada through the Konek platform. A Canadian player should expect the Interac name to mean e-Transfer at a cashier, not the old browser redirect.
About Interac
What Interac Is
Interac is Canada's domestic payments network. Interac Corp. describes itself as a payments and digital information exchange provider that has been working to make life and business more seamless since 1984, and says its Interac Debit and Interac e-Transfer services have made it a household name across Canada: 88 per cent of Canadians have used Interac e-Transfer, and Canadians completed more than 6.5 billion Interac Debit transactions in the year ending October 2023. The brand covers several products, which matters for a casino cashier, because they do not all still exist.
Interac Online Ended on 31 October 2024
Interac Online was the product that took a shopper from a merchant's checkout into their own online banking to authorise a payment, and it was the Interac product online cashiers offered. Interac's own notice states that Interac Online is no longer available as of 31 October 2024, and publishes the same notice in French. There is no longer an Interac Online page anywhere on interac.ca.
Interac E-Transfer Is Still in Service
Interac e-Transfer is live and is the product most Canadians mean by "Interac". Interac describes it as a way to send and receive money anytime, to any Canadian bank account, directly from a bank account. Sending money internationally is possible from a Canadian account but only through one participating bank, which Interac names as National Bank.
Interac Direct, and Its Limits
Interac's current card-free online bank payment is Interac Direct. Interac describes it as enabling online shopping at participating merchants with card-free payments from a chequing, savings or line of credit account held at a participating financial institution, and states that it is exclusively available on the Konek digital payment solution. Interac's own FAQ describes it as a new online payment option with participating merchants in Canada available through the Konek gateway, and says it is currently available through the Konek service with participating merchants in Canada with additional merchant participation to come. Interac does not describe Interac Direct as a replacement for Interac Online.
What This Means at a Cashier
Interac is a live brand in a single market, offering a narrower set of online products than it once did. A reader who sees "Interac" at a casino cashier should check which product is actually meant: Interac e-Transfer is in service, and the browser redirect that the name used to imply ended on 31 October 2024.
Fees and Timings
No consumer fee and no deposit time are given here. Interac's own fee page addresses what businesses pay to accept Interac, not what a player pays, and no official Interac page states a transfer time. What a bank charges for an Interac e-Transfer is set by that bank, and what a casino takes to credit a deposit is the casino's figure, not Interac's.
