About Discover
What a Discover Deposit Is
Discover is a card network and the issuer of its own cards. Its own page states that Discover Credit Cards are accepted at millions of places around the world, and that Discover is accepted at 99% of places that take credit cards nationwide in the United States. The same page notes that when Discover was launched in 1986 it had to catch up with other older credit card networks. Discover Global Network states that its global network is accepted in more than 185 countries and territories, and that there are 439 million cards running on that network — a count which, by its own footnote, includes open cards on Discover Network, Diners Club International and network alliances.
The Great Britain Credit Card Ban
Discover issues credit cards, and the Gambling Commission's prohibition in Great Britain is written as a duty on the gambling business rather than on the card issuer: its guidance for the public states that gambling businesses must not accept credit card payments for gambling. The Commission introduced that ban on 14 April 2020, and states that it extends to payments for gambling made by credit card through any money service business, such as an e-wallet. A casino licensed in Great Britain therefore cannot take a credit card for gambling, wherever the card was issued, and routing the same card through a wallet does not change that.
Online Gambling Is a Registered Category on the Network
Discover's own network rules place online gambling in a restricted class. Discover Global Network states that its High Brand Risk programme manages the elevated risk of specific transaction verticals like online gambling, skill-based games, and digital currency via enhanced registration and operating requirements, and that acquirers with a relationship with defined High Brand Risk merchant categories are responsible for registering their merchants. That is a duty on a casino's acquiring bank rather than a restriction on the cardholder.
Checking Acceptance by Country
Discover directs cardholders to check acceptance market by market: its own page states that to check for acceptance in a specific country, a cardholder should visit the Discover international credit card acceptance page. No country list is reproduced here, because acceptance changes and a list copied into a paragraph would not be re-checked when it does.
Fees and Timings
No fee and no timing is stated here. No Discover page states a fee or a funding time for a gambling deposit, and cash-advance pricing is set per account in the cardmember agreement.
